DREAM
I slipped into a dream after watching the nightly news on television in the summer of 1992, the summer when Californians braced themselves for their first state execution in more than twenty-seven years.
I was with close friends on the deck of a giant boat, surrounded by miles of ocean. As we enjoyed ourselves in the blazing sun, a crew of men worked on some diving equipment, making it ready for us. We all wanted to explore the ocean depths and the many beautiful species inhabiting this great sea.
On the side of the boat was a small single-man diving bell, and someone was testing its system of communication with the main boat. We all mingled around the bell, chatting about how expensive it must have been.
The diving bell was green and shaped like a capsule or a miniature submarine. It had two small windows on each side and one thick chamber door in front. Attached to the top was a single fat rubber tube. It seemed to be suspended by an electronic chain belt, and a remote-control crane moved it from side to side.
I was the first to go inside. The heavy chamber door slammed shut, sealing me in, and I sat there not knowing what to expect. I heard the clanking sounds of the crane lifting the diving bell off the boat and the chain belt lowering it slowly onto the surface of the water.
I peered out the window as the bell submerged into the sea. I could see millions of tiny brilliant bubbles all around me. They were magnificent. They sparkled, then vanished, and the ocean transformed into a beautiful aquarium filled with fish swimming around the bell. There were thousands of them, of all colors and sizes, their tails swaying gracefully right before my eyes. I think we smiled at each other.
As I plunged deeper into this marvelous hidden world, I felt I was being swallowed into the vast throat of Mother Earth, and the many forms I was gazing at were like thousands of microscopic cells traveling throughout this vast body of life.
Then suddenly my mind sobered, and I became frightened. Where was I? As I spiraled down into this sea that had turned to night, its inhabitants began to terrify me.
My heart started to pound like a drum against my chest; I felt claustrophobic and short of breath. I grabbed the microphone above me and called out for help. But there was no reply—no human being heard me as I descended deeper into the black hole of the sea. “Where are my friends?” I wondered, and panicked all the more now that I was lost from all of them.
My throat started to swell, and I staggered out of my seat. I had no balance and lost my sight, until an awful vision began to unfold. Monstrous faces appeared, as if summoned to witness my fate in this inescapable chamber of hell. I tried desperately to fight them off, but I couldn’t breathe. “Help me…Lord God,” I gasped.
